SWS State of the Recycling Industry Address
As a company, when you are impacted by uncontrollable factors, you can either complain about it, you can try and fight against them, or you can evaluate the situation, adjust accordingly and move onward and upward. At SWS, we are choosing the latter.

So, what has been impacting the recycling industry recently? Two things – a weakened Chinese economy and lower oil prices. The Chinese have become the world's largest consumer of raw materials from collected recyclables. Their demand for materials supported higher commodity values, however, as the Chinese economy shrank, the global commodity market subsided. The decrease in prices results in a decrease in Materials Recovery Facility revenue. Also, as oil prices drop, the cost of producing virgin plastic (resin produced directly from natural gas or crude oil) becomes cheaper than recovered plastics. Low oil prices further weakens the commodity market for plastics.

Okay…so now what? We will continue to serve our customers by providing eco-friendly waste handling solutions throughout the region, which will keep materials out of landfills. We will stay informed about industry news and keep a close eye on the recycling forecast, communicate with our customers and employees, while making any necessary modifications to our current business plan.

And last but not least, we will keep abreast of new practices to magnify the benefits of recycling while running an efficient, effective and successful business to show our customers – and the environment – that SWS is in it for the long haul.

The Price Pressures
At prices around $40 a barrel, crude is down more than 70 percent in the last 18 months. Over the years, the price tends to fluctuate in response to geopolitical and economic turmoil. Worries about China's health is weighing on oil.

EMPLOYEE PROFILE
DAWN e. WOODROW – Serving the Public Sustainably

If you look up the English idiom "to wear many hats," you just may find Dawn Woodrow's name next to it. At SWS, Dawn keeps operations running smoothly by handling accounts receivable, inside sales, business development and sales support. She has been with SWS for four years now, having started out on a part-time basis before going full-time as the company grew.

Prior to joining the SWS family, Dawn served as a Child Support Hearing Officer for the State of New Jersey and a Domestic Relations Officer for Bucks County. She received a Master's Degree in Public Administration from Penn State University and a Bachelor's in Criminal Justice from West Chester University. You can say that she has quite the track record working for and with the public for more than 25 years.

When asked what her favorite thing is about her job, Dawn said, "working directly with the customers and developing relationships with them over time. I work to serve them, to ensure they are satisfied with our services." Not only is she great at making connections, but she is known for getting the job done by remaining organized, efficient and reliable; you can count on her.

Dawn currently resides in Dublin, Pa., with her husband, Jeff, and two sons, Evan and Reid. When she is not busy holding down the fort for the greater good of the environment, Dawn enjoys spending time with family and always looks forward to their annual summer vacation in Cape May Point, NJ.

We are very fortunate to have someone as smart (and funny) as Dawn at SWS. Thanks in large part to her efforts, our future is bright, and our customers remain landfill-free – to us…there's no place we'd rather be!
